How did your dog become a part of your life?

At the time, my wife and I were newly married and considering a dog as a means to prepare us for children. Through a serendipitous moment, we were guided to an adoption event and that is where we found Jax.

Jax was a rescue puppy and had suffered some traumas, but was immediately comfortable with us, which gave us the feeling that this was a “meant to be” moment.

A couple years later, we adopted Teddy as a playmate for Jax. Teddy was a very confident puppy, full of mischief and affection for any and all.

What makes your dogs unique?

Since we do not know their back stories, we routinely make up our own narratives based on their quirky behaviors. Overall, Jax is our high maintenance child, always present, always involved, and puts up a tough front but has a soft side most never see.

Teddy is a stark contrast. He gives you all the love up front, will lick your face off if you let him, and is completely content disappearing under a blanket somewhere.

What’s your favorite way to spoil your dog?

Our dogs are very much a part of our daily routine. Any time we can break that mold and direct some extra attention to them, whether through inclusive play, belly rubs, or a thoughtful treat, they let us know how appreciative they are for the effort.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being a dog owner for you?

The most rewarding part for us has been the unconditional love you experience from (and for) your pets.

We understand the limited time we have with them and that has helped to shape our attitude and perspective towards the people in our lives and any challenges we encounter along the way.

This has helped to make us better parents and better partners to each other.

Tell us about your favorite thing to do with your dog in San Antonio.

A walk from the Pearl to downtown is one of our favorite activities. It gives Jax and Teddy a broad palette of exploration and socialization opportunities, while also giving us an opportunity to sample the ever-growing entertainment and food offerings along River North.
