Dog wearing a DIY jet pack Halloween costume

Have you started thinking about Halloween costumes for you and your family? What about a costume for your favorite dog? If you’re short on ideas (and maybe short of cash, too), check out this adorable DIY dog Halloween costume. This easy and affordable DIY Jetpack Dog Costume will have everyone at the Halloween party over-the-moon for your dog.

(Bonus: it’s super easy to make)

If you’re a last-minute kind of person like me, THIS is the dog costume for you. In total, it took me about 30 minutes to make and I only spent $5 on the supplies (thanks to my nearby dollar store).

Here’s the rundown of how to create this cuteness:

DIY Jetpack Dog Costume

Materials:

  • 2 soda bottles (purchase an appropriate size in comparison to your dog, I bought 2 medium-sized sodas for my medium-sized dog)
  • 1 roll of duct tape
  • 1 sheet of red or orange tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • (optional: twine-wrapped wire to fasten to your dog’s harness)

Procedure:

The first thing you’ll want to do is empty out your soda bottles (CHUG! CHUG!) and remove both labels. Make sure the inside of both bottles are dry and then screw their caps back on.

Next, you’re going to take your duct tape and completely wrap each bottle. Make sure you cover the bottom and top of both bottles, including the entirety of the lids.

Then, using your duct tape again, you’re going to tape the bottles together. Place the bottles next to each other, lid-side facing down, and wrap the tape horizontally around the middle sections of the bottles – circle around them completely a couple of times until they are fully secured. Here’s a picture for reference:

Finally, you’re going to make the flames. Take your sheet of tissue paper and cut it in half. Take your half sheet and fold it down until it’s about two inches wide and 10 inches long (this doesn’t have to be exact). Cut it in half to make two 5-inch long sections. They should look roughly like this:

Now, you’re gonna bust out your 2nd-grade snowflake cutting skills. Take your scissors and cut some pointed flames into the bottom two inches of both sets of the tissue paper. Once you’ve completed this, unfold your tissue (or snowflake, if you will) and wrap the uncut side around the lid of the bottle and secure it with–you guessed it–more duct tape.

This should be your end result:

Now you’re gonna secure it to your pup, There are a couple of ways to do this, so feel free to get creative, but this is what I did:

I ran some twine-wrapped wire that I bought from the dollar store vertically between the bottles underneath the horizontal duct tape that holds them together. Then I strapped my pup into his harness and ran both ends of the wire under the straps of his harness and secured them to the jetpack with duct tape.

* If you decide to go this route, make sure you cover any ends of the wire that might be sticking out, as these could potentially hurt your dog if they’re left exposed.

Now you’re ready to party! There’s no doubt your dog’s costume will be a hit, but make sure you pick one for yourself as well. Here are some costume ideas for you, in case you’re looking to win the couples costume contest with your pup:

  • An Astronaut
  • An Alien
  • A Meteor
  • The Moon
  • The Earth
  • A Rocket Ship
  • Elton John (Rocket Man)
