If there’s one thing I love more than dogs, it’s books. I love the feel, the smell, (Terry loves the taste), and putting my nose in a good book is one of my favorite pastimes. So when our dog trainer, Stephanie, of Pup Pup and Away, took us to Half Price Books on Broadway for one of our training sessions I was nerdy excited.

We kept the training session sweet and short (about 30 minutes) and Terry was an absolute champ. Sadly I left without any books for that first visit, but I did return recently to work on training solo with my pup and I was able to pick out a book this time. We’re still working on browsing luxuriously throughout the entire store.

Interested in taking your pup to Half Price Books? Well you’re in luck, because all of the San Antonio stores are dog friendly (yas!). And it’s kind of the perfect place to hang with your dog during the dog days of summer.

Tips for Taking Your Dog to the Bookstore

  1. Go on a slow day. The weekend probably isn’t the best time to bring Fido to the bookstore if he’s not used to being around a lot of people. A weekday, or weekday evening is likely to have fewer crowds.
  2. Keep it short. If you’re pup is excellently trained, then no problemo, but if you’re still getting the hang of things, no need to start off running a marathon.
  3. Use the loo before you go. This goes for you and your pup. No one wants to have an emergency indoors.
  4. Get some energy out before you go, too. The last thing you want to do when you’re bringing your dog someplace you want them to be chill is not let them release any energy before you go. Take your pup for a walk around the block or let them run around in the backyard before you venture out. Otherwise they may have a harder time not getting over excited and stimulated.
  5. Leave on a good note. This was a really great tip from Stephanie, especially if your pup is still in training. It’s best to leave when things are going well, rather than stretching it until things start going south.

How about you? Are you and your pup book lovers? Any other favorite dog-friendly bookstores in town?
