When I had my first pet after moving away from home, I had to experience the difficult decision of surrendering her a year later due to my financial and educational situation. I was heartbroken and felt the shame of having been a terrible “Dog Mom”. My intentions were there, and yet, my knowledge was not there. Shortly after, I promised myself I would not get another pet until I knew I could support them, not just financially, but with my time, efforts, love, and knowledge.
As I’ve grown and matured, I’ve realized that I likely could have found other options had someone shared with me the resources that existed in my area to help alleviate financial burden of having a pet, therefore helping avoid my aforementioned situation. It is the goal of many organizations and shelters to provide these resources before a pet is surrendered. So it is with Bella in mind that I’m sharing some low-cost services and resources in the San Antonio to help you navigate pet parenthood in the case of a life event or unforeseen obstacle.
San Antonio ACS (Animal Care Services)
As a resident of San Antonio and applicable zip codes you have access to low cost vaccinations through their weekly clinics at the shelter. Held every Monday from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm (no appointment needed) in the ACS Annex Building, the clinics offer pet owners the opportunity to purchase low cost shots for their companion animals as well as get their dog or cat microchipped and licensed as required by city law. ACS also offers heavily discounted spay & neutering services, sometimes even free, by appointment and is also home to a “Pet Pantry” a solely donation-funded food assistance program for pet owners who need a little extra help in hope of keeping pets in their home rather than being surrendered to the shelter.
Daisy Cares
The DaisyCares Pet Food Program provides pet food to clients through an established network of partner agencies (such as the San Antonio Food Bank) already providing emergency food assistance to families and individuals in need. The primary purpose of the DaisyCares program is to prevent animal surrenders due to a family’s inability to feed their pet(s).The DaisyCares Veterinary Care program was created to help needy pet owners and rescue groups with the cost of veterinary care.
San Antonio Humane Society
SAHS Wellness Clinics are a great opportunity for low-cost wellness and preventative services to help your pet continue to live a healthy lifestyle. Wellness clinics are offered at both the San Antonio Humane Society on Fredericksburg Rd. and the Brooks Spay/Neuter Clinic on City Base Landing. SAHS offers vaccinations, flea prevention, heartworm tests and prevention, nail trims, and dewormers.
Getting Involved
Another great opportunity for getting assistance for any needs you may have is to get involved in local community events geared towards pets. (See our Calendar) As a new resident to the San Antonio area, I’ve found that my involvement has led me to see the wonderful small local businesses and their owners (such as pet bakeries, trainers, groomers, vets, and boutiques). It’s through the formation of these relationships with my community that I’ve been able to access resources such as free nail trimming workshops and how to properly care for my pet … and hey! Free toys sometimes!
All in all, don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t be ashamed if you haven’t always been the best pet parent. In the time that I’ve become a pet parent once again, I’ve done my best to provide for my pup in the best way that I know. It is through my admission of needing help and knowledge that I’ve met incredible trainers and groomers that have allowed me to be even better for my pup and understand the breed in a way that will keep myself, others, and the community safe and thriving.
