It helps readers select the right dog for their lifestyle and provides practical advice on dog care, grooming, health, and basic obedience training. The book is designed to guide both potential and current dog owners in caring for and understanding their dogs.

Reader Review:

“What a great and informative book. I have searched for a good breed book and tried several others. many were too basic or filled with errors. This one is very informative and great pictures.”

“Every Dog: A Book of Over 450 Breeds” is an in-depth guide for dog lovers, detailing over 450 breeds from around the world. This book covers a wide range of breeds, from rare to popular and from ancient to modern, including designer dogs.

It categorizes breeds by type, ancestry, and purpose, providing detailed information on each breed’s origin, coat colors, exercise needs, and characteristics like intelligence and ease of training.

The book also features color photos of adult dogs and puppies, making it a comprehensive and visually appealing resource for understanding a vast array of dog breeds.

Reader Review:

“It’s the perfect size so that it’s not huge, but the words aren’t tiny either. It’s very neat inside and clearly details everything. I got this because I’m a dog bather and would like to stop categorizing any dog that merely looks like a Labrador/Chihuahua/Maltese as that breed.

I saw another review by a dog groomer confused on the classifications of the breeds and that the energy level/affection level are all random, but I researched and Bulldogs are in fact guard dogs and miniature poodles are descended from herding dogs. The ratings I only use as an average personality because every dog is different.

I really enjoy the history tid bits in this book as well. Would totally recommend to someone as long as they know not to stereotype dog breeds into being all the same.”

3. The Dog Encyclopedia

“The Dog Encyclopedia” is a comprehensive resource covering over 400 dog breeds, delving into their history, evolution, and anatomy. The book showcases dogs in various cultural contexts and includes a comprehensive catalog of breeds with detailed photographs and profiles. It provides practical information on dog care, from exercise and feeding to grooming and health issues. This guide combines vivid imagery with up-to-date breed information and practical advice, making it a valuable tool for dog owners and enthusiasts.

Reader Review:

“This book provides clear photos and basic information on a few hundred breeds of dogs. I was worried that it would not represent enough of the breeds, perhaps only featuring one or another of the kennel clubs, but I’m glad to say that it is more than sufficient.

Owners looking for a new dog may find the volume lacking in information on breed traits, but I really don’t think that it’s realistic to get all of that from an encyclopedia. Rather, this book excels at helping someone identify breeds, explore relationships among breeds, and such of that.

There is an introduction with some neat information on dogs (their evolutionary journey, anatomy, etc.) and a concluding section on dog care (which I admittedly found unnecesary in an encyclopedia, but I won’t take off for the filler pages).

Also, very importantly, the index in the back is organized very well; looking up a dog breed there will find every reference to the breed listed in normal font, and the breed’s main page listed in bold. This means that it is easy to find a breed by name, and also easy to find where that breed may be discussed in comparison to other breeds.

Final note, this book is much larger than I thought it would be.”

Reader Review:

“I don’t think I’ve read a book for such a long time that was so meticulously researched and so insightful about the way breeds came to be through the Victorian era in England. I very much enjoyed all the little facts as asides too.

The interplay between Darwin, eugenics, breed, pedigree and the emerging middle classes is explored in all its minutiae. I’d guess that for people wanting a light read or popular non-fiction about dogs, it may be a little dry and slow for your tastes, but read over several sittings and digested as slowly as the thorough detail in the book requires, it was a fascinating read.”
